Put simply, coaching is the art of helping others to achieve their goals through powerful questioning, great listening and helping another person to become resourceful to make the changes they want to make.
At Azure, we believe that coaching is one of the most powerful tools that can be utilised in the workplace. Coaching targets the improvement of performance at work by focusing on specific goals and making the most of the strengths that individuals possess, helping them to be confident, motivated and happy both at work and in life. Over the years, we have worked with many organisations coaching their leaders to be more successful and to really impact their organisation’s performance. We have also developed many people to qualify as coaches and helped numerous individual leaders to develop a coaching style that can be practically used on a day to day basis.
Mentoring, like coaching, helps individuals improve performance but it involves more guidance and sharing of knowledge and experience, often over a long time period and most typically from an individual who is more experienced in the area of learning required.
Mentoring is greatly underutilised in many workplaces. The mentor : mentee relationship has the potential to develop both parties and when it works well, the trust built up can provide support and learning that lasts for many years. Some organisations that promote mentoring expect mentors to undertake the role with little or no training and then wonder why the process doesn’t work as effectively as they expected. Great mentors need to be skilled in the same way that great coaches do and we have helped many to develop these complementary, but differing skills over out time in business.
